Knock-Knock

Reading time: 23 seconds

Knock-knock.

Anybody there?  Yes, you.

Knock-knock.

Nothing.

Have you noticed how hard it is to get through to some people?  They seem to be sleepwalking and refuse to do what’s required to make the system work best.  They manage to do enough to stay at the edge of your radar screen, but they aren’t real contributors and you have to work much too hard to ensure that the system functions as it should.  Those folks are being compliant, not committed, and they are dispiriting all those who are giving their best.

There is nothing you can do if someone who looks to you for leadership is sleepwalking.  It’s a conscious, individual choice to withhold that you cannot override.  Jim Collins teaches us to get the wrong people off the bus and that surely must include those who sleepwalk in your shop.

“You cannot awaken someone who is pretending to sleep.” (anon.).  Go find the wide awake people who will complete knock-knock jokes with you (metaphorically speaking, of course) and everyone will have a better time, including you.

More broadly said, do what great leaders do:  Make the difficult decisions and take action on them promptly.  I promise that life will get better fast.
